七十二候のお話：7月17日〜22日頃「鷹乃学習」(たかすなわちわざをならう)

小暑の末候は「鷹乃学習」(たかすなわちわざをならう)。６月頃に孵った鷹のヒナが、飛び方=獲物の捕り方＝独りで生きる術を学ぶ時期と言われています。今日では鷹と人間の生活にあまり接点はないように思いますが、古く徳川時代には鷹を使っての狩りは高貴な人たちの間では武芸のひとつとして重要視されていたのだそう。鴨川の上空を飛ぶ鷹の中には、”学習中”のヒナも混ざっているかもしれませんね。なにげなく空を見上げて、古き日本の伝統に想いをはせてみるのも楽しいのではないでしょうか。

Japan’s 72 micro seasons story：July 17-22 “Taka sunawachi Awaza o narau” Hawks learn to fly

This is the season a month old young hawks start to learn how to fly and catch food, equal to how to live by themselves. But why is this event about hawks appear to Japanese calendar? Why was this so important to our life?

About 4,000years ago, hawks were valued highly as a tool for hunting. Especially during Tokugawa period, it was considered one of martial arts among nobles. Since that time hawker(falconer) were part of our life. This culture seems to be lost today, however, it is enjoyable to think about the ancient Japanese life when you see hawks flying over Kamo-river Kyoto.
